The shield isn't really necessary if you're just shooting the gravity poppers for your own enjoyment but they do keep competitors from shooting the mounting bolt area if you've got a small target at a match
The shield ISN'T for protecting the target as all of the steel can handle rimfire rounds without issue
I've bought two of the gravity poppers and I would definitely recommend protecting it by getting these shields. As all of Atlas' items these are nice quality and worth the extra money to protect your equipment.

Must have for my gravity poppers
I bought a couple of gravity poppers for my grandsons. The 6 year old is a good marksman (iron sights and scope) but as we increase the range he may be prone to missing low. I bought these to prevent a low shot from eventually messing up the popper. They are easy to install, fit perfectly, and do the job.

Easy Install
I would say this is a necessary item to prolong the target's life. Good stuff.
